- Root Canal Therapy
Root Canal treatment (a root canal) performed when decay is extensive or has already destroyed a tooth.
During a Root Canal, the pulp in the tooth is removed and the cavity is filled. This prevents the development of infection in the pulp that may spread to other teeth.
A Root Canal can also treat an infection that has developed into an abscessed tooth. This will stop the infection, relieve pain and promote healing. The procedure for a root canal is shown in the video below
The Root Canal Process
“The process we follow at Star Smiles Dental Centre is very simple, safe and pain-free.”
- First, we numb your gums with a jelly-like substance after which we apply a local anaesthetic. This will completely numb your teeth, gums, tongue and skin in that area.
- Next, we carefully remove the pulp from your tooth.
- We then fill the inside part of the tooth below the gum line with medication to clear up any infection, temporary filling materials, and a final root canal filling
- Quite often, after the filling, a permanent crown is needed. In that case, we remove the decay and make an impression of your tooth. We then send it to a laboratory where a technician uses the impression to make a crown that perfectly matches your tooth.
Post Treatment
After a root canal, your lips and gums may remain numb for a few hours until the anaesthetic wears off. Later you may have sensitivity, which you can treat with medication. Apart from that, there are no major side effects.
If you have an infected tooth, bacteria from the mouth may enter your bloodstream and cause infections in other parts of your body. You may need to take antibiotics before and after a root canal treatment.
Some Issues to Consider
Since a root canal removes the pulp inside your tooth, it becomes more fragile and may break if it is not covered with a crown or cap.
To avoid a severe infection, you must do a root canal as soon as possible because you risk damaging, the bone surrounding the root of your tooth and infect other teeth.
If you have a severely infected tooth that has decayed you may choose to have the tooth removed (extracted). Space can be left open or restored with a fixed or removable bridge. This is a less expensive option to a root canal.
