Aftercare

General guidance for the days after treatment. Always follow the instructions your dentist gave you.

Call 000 or go to a hospital emergency department if you have swelling that affects your breathing or swallowing, bleeding that will not stop, or a serious injury to your face or jaw.

Your gums may feel a little tender for a day. Keep brushing and flossing gently as usual.

If fluoride was applied, follow the eating and drinking advice your dentist gave you.

Call us if bleeding or tenderness lasts more than a few days. (03) 9562 0675

Numbness usually wears off within a few hours. Until it does, avoid hot drinks and chewing on that side so you don’t burn or bite your cheek.

Some sensitivity to hot and cold is common for a few days.

Call us if your bite feels high, or the pain gets worse instead of better. (03) 9562 0675

The tooth may be tender for a few days. Pain relief taken as directed on the pack usually helps.

Avoid chewing hard food on that side until the tooth has its final filling or crown.

Call us if you notice swelling, or the temporary filling comes out. (03) 9562 0675

Avoid sticky and very hard food on that side.

When you floss, slide the floss out sideways rather than lifting it up, so the crown stays in place.

Call us if the temporary crown comes loose or falls out. Keep it and bring it with you. (03) 9562 0675

Short-term sensitivity is common and usually settles within a few days.

Use any take-home trays exactly as your dentist showed you.

Call us if sensitivity is severe or lasts longer than a week. (03) 9562 0675

Aligners need to be worn for about 20 to 22 hours a day to work. Take them out to eat and drink anything other than water, and brush before putting them back in.

With braces, soft food helps for the first few days. Orthodontic wax can cover a bracket that rubs.

Call us if a wire breaks or pokes, or an aligner no longer fits. (03) 9562 0675

Rinse it in cool water and clean it with a soft toothbrush each morning. Hot water can warp it.

Keep it in its case, away from pets, and bring it to your check-ups.

Call us if it cracks or stops fitting comfortably. (03) 9562 0675

Fees and health funds

We talk about costs as part of your examination and treatment planning, before any treatment starts. If you have private health insurance, we can give you a treatment plan with item numbers so you can check your rebate with your fund. For the fee for a particular appointment, please call us.
