A check-up lets your dentist find small problems early, while they are simpler to look after. A professional clean removes the hardened plaque (tartar) that brushing and flossing at home cannot shift.
What a check-up includes
- A look at your teeth, gums, tongue and the soft tissues of your mouth
- X-rays when they are needed to see between teeth or below the gum line
- A professional scale and clean to remove plaque and tartar
- A polish to remove surface stains
- Advice on brushing, flossing and diet that suits you
How often to come in
Many people come every six to twelve months. Your dentist will suggest a time that suits your teeth, gums and health, and may suggest more frequent visits if you have gum disease or a higher risk of decay.
Oral cancer checks
Your dentist also checks the soft tissues of your mouth as part of your examination, and will tell you if anything needs a closer look.
